How Much Does It Cost to Paint a Room?

A fresh coat of paint can change how a room feels before you replace a single piece of furniture. Warm neutral walls, a clean ceiling, and carefully finished trim can make a familiar space feel brighter and more inviting. The first question, though, is usually practical: what will it cost?
For a standard bedroom with sound walls and ordinary ceiling heights, a useful planning budget for professional walls-only painting is roughly $400–$1,200. A more complete refresh with ceilings, trim, and doors may fall around $800–$2,000 or more. These are illustrative planning ranges synthesized from published Massachusetts contractor pricing, not fixed Brush Strokes & Beyond prices. Your written estimate depends on the room and the work requested.
What does “paint a room” include?
Two estimates can look very different because they cover different surfaces. A walls-only repaint usually leaves the ceiling, baseboards, window trim, doors, and closet unchanged. A complete room refresh adds some or all of those surfaces, each with its own preparation and painting steps.
Before comparing prices, decide what you want refreshed. Ask whether the price includes paint, surface protection, minor patching, primer where needed, the specified finish coats, and cleanup. Confirm larger repairs separately.
A practical room-painting budget
| Project scope | Illustrative planning budget |
|---|---|
| Standard bedroom: walls only | $400–$1,200 |
| Standard bedroom: walls, ceiling, trim and doors | $800–$2,000+ |
| Large or detailed room / substantial preparation | Project-specific; may exceed $2,000 |
These ranges assume conventional painted surfaces and routine preparation. Wallpaper removal, extensive plaster repairs, built-ins, specialty finishes, and difficult access can increase the total. Massachusetts examples inform this guide; pricing in Rhode Island and New Hampshire should be confirmed through a local project estimate.
Why room size is only part of the price
Floor area alone does not describe the painting work. A 12-by-12-foot room has 144 square feet of floor space, but its four walls total about 384 square feet at an 8-foot ceiling height, before subtracting windows and doors. That wall area needs preparation and coating. The ceiling adds another 144 square feet if it is included.
Tall ceilings, decorative molding, multiple doors, and detailed window casings add work even when two rooms share the same floor dimensions. A furnished living room also requires protection and access around furniture.
Preparation and paint choices matter
Small nail holes and light scuffs are different from cracked plaster, peeling coatings, or wallpaper adhesive. Repairs, sanding, and appropriate priming help create the surface that the finish paint needs. A smooth final appearance starts with this preparation.
Changing from a deep color to a light neutral can require a different coating plan than repainting a similar shade. Paint product, sheen, existing surface, and coverage affect that plan. Have the estimate identify the product and proposed coats rather than assuming every room needs the same treatment.
How to make the most of your budget
Choose the room that would make the biggest difference to daily life. If the ceiling and trim are already in good condition, a walls-only refresh may be a sensible starting point. If several rooms need attention, ask for a combined estimate; shared setup may improve the overall value.
Gather room measurements, clear photos, and a list of surfaces before requesting an estimate. Mention visible damage and whether the room will be furnished. Compare proposals with the same preparation, surfaces, materials, and coat specifications so you understand what each price buys.
