How Much Does It Cost to Paint Kitchen Cabinets?

If you like your kitchen’s layout but want a fresh look, painting suitable cabinets can be worth exploring. Before choosing a color, start with the practical question: how much should you budget?
A broad planning range for professional kitchen cabinet painting is approximately $1,500–$7,000 for many kitchens. Larger kitchens, extensive repairs or preparation, and more detailed work may cost more. Published Massachusetts examples vary, so your cabinet condition and the agreed scope matter more than a single average.
These are general planning figures. Brush Strokes & Beyond provides a project-specific written estimate after reviewing your cabinets and the finish you want. Rhode Island and New Hampshire projects should also be priced for their location and scope.
A practical cabinet painting budget
| Project | Planning budget |
|---|---|
| Many professional kitchen cabinet painting projects | Approximately $1,500–$7,000 |
| Larger kitchens or substantial preparation and repairs | May exceed $7,000; confirm through an estimate |
What affects your estimate?
- Doors and drawer fronts. More pieces and more detailed profiles add preparation and finishing work.
- Existing condition. Grease, worn coatings, chips and damaged areas affect the preparation needed.
- Color and coating plan. The existing finish and your chosen color influence suitable primer and finish products.
- Surfaces included. Doors, drawer fronts, frames, end panels, an island and cabinet interiors are different parts of the scope. Confirm which are included.
- Hardware and repairs. Replacing handles, changing their positions, or repairing damaged cabinetry may add work.
Why preparation matters
Kitchen cabinets are handled daily and exposed to cooking residue. A suitable finish starts with reviewing the existing surfaces, cleaning, preparing them for adhesion, addressing agreed repairs, and selecting compatible coatings. Removal, protection of surrounding areas, reinstallation and finishing details can also be part of the work.
Ask what the estimate includes: preparation, materials, surfaces, application method, cleanup, and reinstallation where applicable. Compare the same scope across proposals.
Are your cabinets suitable for painting?
We review the cabinets before recommending a refresh. Paint can change their appearance, but damaged cabinet boxes or failing surface coverings may need other work first. Tell us about peeling, swelling, loose components or previous coating problems when you request an estimate.
